The "Underboss" History
Originally constructed by Jack Slawick of North West Racecars in Oregon, the Demon was built as a back up car for Ed “The Ace” McCulloch. McCulloch never needed the car so it was eventually traded for home improvement work to DuWayne Franklin also of Oregon. Franklin ran the car with a 180 degree crankshaft Hemi on Nitromethane, with Frank Hall doing the driving. They ran mostly in Portland Oregon and Canada. Photo's of the original car are few and far between. Franklin's ex wife burned all original photo's of the car. Phil Elliot was gracious enough to send me a few that he has found. The car was originally green with stripes and stars and called “the Spider” The car was eventually sold to Kenney Goodell to fulfill sponsor obligations after he destroyed his car in a crash. The car was also owned by Twig Ziegler for a short period of time. Ron Huegli owned the car for most of the 1980's, Huegli tried running a twin turbo alcohol motor, he later ran a conventional late model Hemi in the car. The car eventually found it's way back to it's creator Jack Slawick. I purchased the car from Charlie O'Neil of Anaheim California in March 8 th 2002. Some modifications have been done to the chassis to make it legal to run at NHRA events but 90% of the car is the way it was originally built in 1973.
